Ivorystar sat impatiently twiching her tail in the meadow, it was nearly sunhigh, the time where the prey was most active. She had told her apprentice to meet her here at sunhigh, it was time to teach the youngster hunting. What a waste to just sit here and wait, all this time could be spent serving the clan, if that impudent kit knew what was good for (again, him/her) (he/she) would show up sooner rather then later.
Ivorystar saw a rabbit barely two fox-lengths away. Well she might as well make herself useful while she waited, she hated doing nothing. The little rabbit kept nibbling at the grass completely unsuspecting. Ivorystar crept closer and closer waving her tail to time her pounce ...1...2..NOW! She lept and in one deft move slit the rabbit's throat before it could scare off any other prey that showed up for her lesson. Quickly she burried the rabbit corpse in snow so that no other predators would take it and it wouldn't scare what little prey there was around. Where was that little furball anyhow? She checked the sky, it was sunhigh.

Ashpaw's soft green eyes took in the chill day, noting every detail. Even though it was cold, her long black pelt shielded her from some of the chill; even a black pelt that showed vivid against the snow like stars shone bright against the night sky. She shuddered her fur, shaking off a light dusting of snow.
"Ashpaw!"
Ashpaw turned around to see her cousin Brightpaw rushing towards her. "What are you doing?" he demanded. "Are you completely mousebrained? Ivorystar is waiting for you!"
Ashpaw gasped and brushed past Brightpaw and a rapid run. How could she be so stupid? She could usually remember things like that. But she had gotten caught up in the beauty of the day. Ashpaw sighed as she galloped closer to the meadow.
Taking a deep breath so she wouldn't seem harried, Ashpaw slowed to a stately walk and trotted calmly into the meadow. She saw Ivorystar sitting in the meadow and checking the sky. She shivered with excitement as she moved up to Ivorystar, dipping her head in respect.

Ahh there was that little mousebrain now, Ivorystar twitched her ears in the direction of her apprentice then turned to face her. The slow leisurely pace with which Ashpaw had walked annoyed her, didn't the kit know the meaning of time? She would soon be taught.
"You are late" She told her apprentice coldly "It is sunhigh, a little past even and you take your precious time getting to training. Learning the skills of a warrior don't seem very important to you it seems does it?"
Ivorystar knew that she was being harsh but it was important the youngster learn this important lesson. "Well? If its that important to you do you wish me to return you to the nursery?" She asked gazing challengingly into the eyes of her young charge.

Ashpaw flattened her ears against her skull. "Of course it's important to me!" she hissed, then remembered to calm her tongue. "It is more important to me than y- I could say. I only thought you might like a calm apprentice than a frazzled one."
She waited nervously for the reaction of her mentor. Ashpaw kneaded one paw into the ground. She had no clue why she had just blurted that out.

Hearing this reaction Ivorystar couldn't help smiling a little, she cuffed her apprentice affectionately and licked her ear to let Ashpaw know she had been forgiven. "Good, dont let it happen again" She told Ashpaw gruffly "Now then I suppose we should start our training, sniff the air and tell me what you smell? Hunting is a bigger priority then fighting at the moment but tell me everything that you smell, dont leave anything out!" Ivorystar was curious to see how observant her apprentice was.

Ashpaw flicked her tail happily. "I won't," she promised, then sniffed the air. "I smell... snow," she said slowly. "Rabbit. Along with freshkill. And there's a bird in the tree." Again she waited nervously for her mentor's reaction.

"Good, but I smell a few things more, for example, I can smell a little apprentice pretty close to me, I can smell some grass under the snow, I smell windclan markers and a waft of riverclan these things might be obvious but be sure to pay attention to them anyway. The slight Riverclan sent can tell us where the wind is coming from, this time its a large enough wind to be able to feel it against our fur. Wich way is the wind blowing? If the bird had a good nose, would it be able to smell us?" Ivorystar asked Ashpaw.
It was important to get the food but much more important that Ashpaw learn how to get freshkill then the actual freshkill itself. "Remember, we have to be careful, in times like these every small bird is important"

Ashpaw tried to remember all the questions. "The wind is blowing off of RiverClan, so we can smell them but they can't smell us. Or shouldn't be able to. If the bird could smell as well as we can, then... it still couldn't smell us because the tree is out of the path of the wind."
Ashpaw nodded firmly, coming to the last of Ivorystar's instruction. "I'll remember, Ivorystar," she promised solemnly, trying to keep her freezing tail from flicking as she spoke. "Every little bird."

"Very good, now with a bird the most important thing is that they dont see you, they dont have particularly good ears, except for owls, nor do they have good noses. Still be careful not to make noise if you can, Ill go up the other side of the tree in case it looks like you need help, stay close to the trunk as you climb and if turns towards you, freeze"
With that, Ivorystar stealthily climbed the tree keeping out of the bird's line of vision untill she was standing on a branch right above it. Birds where the toughest prey to catch, she hoped that they would manage it together. Ivorystar nodded her head to signal to Ashpaw that it was now her turn. She tensed ready to spring if anything went wrong.

Ashpaw nodded firmly, forcing her tail to lay still. She crept forward, aware that her ebony fur stood out starkly against the snow. One paw... the next paw... Ashpaw put all her concentration on staying silent.
The bird ruffled its feathers. Ashpaw froze in her place, but when the bird didn't move, she began her creeping again. She reached the trunk and swallowed nervously. She had never been very good at climbing. She put one paw on the bark and clawed her way up. Except for one slip, she made it up to the branch unharmed. She breathed a sigh of relief when the bird didn't move.

Ivorystar looked on aprovingly, the little apprentice had made it within pouncing distance, now... if she could pounce successfully the prey was theirs. She nodded once, silently signaling Ashpaw to finish the bird. Iorystar tensed herself focusing on where the bird might go if it managed to avoid Ashpaw.
